Book Review

The Last Lords of Ormond- Cromwellian Plantation, Prelude and Aftermath in the Countrie of the Three O'Kennedys

In an attempt to identify accurate source materials, we (members of Clan Kennedy Association) first locate materials written with the Kennedys / O'Kennedys as a subject matter. Then as an attempt to verify the information we try to cross reference the source materials, and locate independent reviews of the material(s). We have performed a book reveiw search of "The Last Lords of Ormond-" By: Dermot F.Gleeson . Using Google as a method of internet search, using the search term: "Book review The Last Lords of Ormond" , "Ormond History", "The Three O'Kennedies"

In the top fifteen pages we located one webpage with information to a location to purchase the book review. The review was performed by Raymond Gillespie and was published in the Tipperary Historical Journal 2002; edited by Kevin A. Griffin; located at: http://www.tipperarylibraries.ie/ths/thj2002.htm

After having read this book we (members of the Clan Kennedy Association) do, agree that this is a good, very well researched, reference, important in its own right as a source material in the study of the Irish Kennedys.
In fact, this book has more source materials reference than it does original content. Demonstrating the fact that its content is supported by documented source materials.

This book is considered by many to be the definitive Kennedy history. It was the first Regional History to bring light to this period of national significance, first published in 1938.

This book, contains 18 chapters in 149 pages, with pgs.151-234 are notes: both editorial and source; pgs. 236-285 are appendices and there are 26 maps and illustrations.

The research in this book, deals mostly with the history of Ormond / Oir Mhumhan / Urmhumhan: East Munster itself. The modern baronies of Ormond, then known as Muscraige Tire, were in Thomond. The problems connected with the first settleing there of the O'Kennedys and the establishment of their tuath Rule, are involved in the highest degree interesting....the main question is whether the O'Kennedys are a race of the DalCais, indigenous to Tipperary before the eleventh century, or whether they came from Glen Omra and Killokennedy in the east of Clare and settled down on the ancient lands of the Muscraige...

In Review, If a student, historian, researcher, or teacher were in search of a source material that touches a broad aspect of the O'Kennedys in Ormond that were supported by source materials, this title, would be that book/study material. Of all the sources reviewed here; this title has our highest recommendation.
